In the drawer of my Supervisor Desk I keep things I regularly need for students. In addition to the normal supply of rulers, stapler refills, paper clips, pens and pencils, post-a-notes, and random screws I find on the floor, the following are kept in file folders ready to grab when needed. (underlined text are LINKS)
- Study with Parent stickers – these are printed on colorful address labels and I put them on checkups or memorization material that parents need to review with their child. I try to send a text to the parent to be on the look out for it and sign it confirming they studied.
- Math formula “cheat sheet” – I have a page with the most common formulas and rules for operations with signed numbers. I give a copy to students to keep in their office.
- English Handbook – we have this handbook on the PACESuccess homepage in pdf version for easy download. I print out several copies to have available to give students as needed when they need reference materials for parts of speech, diagramming, etc.
English Folder with these items
- Envelopes – when students get to the English PACE where they have to fold paper to fit into an envelope, it is handy to have a small and large size envelope handy
- Bible glossary for SS 1061-1069 – There’s one English PACE where students have to refer to this reference material. I have a paper copy in this file, but it is also available on PACESuccess for a free download if you can’t find a copy.
- English PACEs 1067, 1076, and 1092 are needed to complete assignments later. I just keep a blank copy of each PACE in my desk and loan out, rather than try to find each student’s previously completed PACE
- Word Building 1067 and 1076 are also needed for an assignment in a later year of English. Just keep a reference copy on hand.
- Fanny Crosby testimony story – there is one writing assignment where students have to write a composition about Fanny Crosby’s testimony of coming to salvation. I keep a printed copy of this story from a book or website on file and loan it for reference to students.
- English PACE 1119 Supplement – this pace covers outdated research methods, like the card catalog and Reader’s Guide to Periodic Literature. We have a supplement for the last half of this PACE with update self test and PACE test available in our store for download. I keep a few copies in my desk ready to give students when they get to this PACE.
- Study guide for Dewey Decimal System – there are a couple of PACES where students have to memorize the Dewey Decimal numbering system. I have had students in the past come up with some memory tools to do that which I give to students when they get that assignments.
- List of Character Qualities and their definitions. From the Supervisor’s Manual I copied the pages of all the PACE Character Qualities with definition and verses as there is at least one assignment where students are told to use the ACE Bible and find the character quality list to use.
- Supplements for 1106, 1107, 1118. Students are expected to do sentence diagramming on separate paper for many sentences in these paces. I have created a free download that can be printed out and has the sentence right there and plenty of space to do the diagramming. (Follow link and browse to the PACE number)
- Writing Guide and Rubric. The 11th and 12th grade English courses end with writing a term paper or researched essay for a speech. I have created a guide to tell students what I expect should be included, a reminder for doing bibliography entry for websites, and a rubric for grading the final project. These can be downloaded from PACESuccess.
- Test tip masters. I did item analysis for several years on the English PACE tests and found that certain questions were missed very frequently, even by my “good students.” The test tips give a quick heads-up on some content that students need to remember to study before taking the PACE test – maybe something that was on a check-up but not the self-test.
History File with these pages:
- Civics 1136 project – there is a project for students to look up political candidates or party’s positions on various issues. However, the issues today are very different than what was considered important when the PACES were written. I like to use this updated version.
- Local government listing from newsletter or website. There is an assignment in Civics where students have to research and write an essay about how their local government is structured. It can be very challenging to find that information, especially for students. I keep a print out from a good local government website I found and update it periodically.
- Maps for World Geography – Students working through World Geography are asked to trace and then color and label maps of very region of the world. That can be very tedious and time consuming. To emphasize the learning without the tedium, we created a downloadable set of black-line master maps. I keep sets in my desk and give to students as they get to that course.
- Test Tip masters are available (and NECESSARY!) for Civics and Economics
- There are some maps that are inserted into the first World Geography PACES that have climate regions, etc. Sometimes students think they don’t need it after the first PACE and toss it. When they are required later to refer to it, they need to borrow one from me.
Science File with these pages:
- Advanced Organizer chart for 1086 rock types – a mind-map to review material in this science pace and study it more effectively for the check-up and final tests.
- Climate/Subclimate chart – this content in a few of the science PACES can be confusing to students, so I tried to organize it into a chart that they can refer to and study from
- Mendelian Inheritance in Humans chart for Biology 1107 – I found this hand-out about human genetic traits that are easily dominant or recessive and like to give it to students working through Biology 1107
- Periodic Tables – students invariably lose their Periodic Table which is included in the first Physical Science PACE 1109. I keep copies available to loan.
- Test Tip masters are available (and NECESSARY) for Physical Science. And be sure you remind students to look for video lessons on PACESuccess for every new PACE they get in Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics.
